National data from ONS shows 18,200 excess deaths in England & Wales in the winter of 2013/14, the lowest number ever recorded. The North East had the lowest Excess Winter Deaths Index of all regions and significantly lower than that seen nationally. But there were still 800 additional deaths in the winter months in the North East. Local Authority data is only available for 2012/13 at present, where 480 of the North East's excess of 1,720 deaths occurred in Tees Valley.
