Middlesbrough has the highest level of school absence in England, according to Department for Education data. Hartlepool, Redcar & Cleveland and Darlington all have absence rates in the highest quintile of English local authorities and Stockton has more absence than the England average. Tackling school absence is important for improving educational attainment which leads to improved lifelong population health.
